"In a Q and A after the premiere of the film this week, co-director Ron Cicero said they had completed a version of the film that was a nostalgic celebration of the early-90’s Nickelodeon series, which fans say has been an influence on just about every animated show since then.
Then in early 2018, Buzzfeed reported the accusations of two women that the show’s temperamental creator, John Kricfalusi, or ‘John K” had groomed and lured them into sexually abusive relationships when they were underage.
Cicero said they re-tooled the film to include the new information, with remarks especially from one accuser, Robyn Byrd. The film also reported stories of him mistreating his employees and the conflicts with Nickelodeon, which ultimately got him fired from the show.
Cicero told the audience they just wanted to present the evidence on a story that had many different perspectives.
“You’re gonna talk to so many different people, and they’re gonna be so many different perspectives. And everybody from their perspective is right on John, on the show. And what made this so incredibly complex is that you have people that suffered, like Robyn, at the very one end of the extreme, to people that worked with John who suffered, to fans. We interviewed a lot of fans, not all of them made it up on film of course, but would say, “Look, the last time I saw my mom smile was when we were watching “Ren and Stimpy” just before she died of cancer. This is a show that hit people very deeply. It’s heartbreaking to see them conflicted.”
He said the film considers the question, “ How is the art affected by the artist?” Cicero said they’re not telling the audience how to answer.
“Both in entertainment and in wider society, how do you—It’s not just art vs. artist. How do you balance the trauma of a few against the needs of millions.”
He said hopefully the film starts a discussion of how to prevent this kind of abuse.
Co-director Kimo Easterwood said that Kricfalusi refused to talk to them until the abuse reports surfaced. He said that despite his easy-going façade before the camera, he was an evasive, volatile character who would just walk away when they sometimes got into sensitive areas.
Cicero said when they pressed him to apologize to Robyn Byrd, they were amazed by his response.
“You look at his body language and how he makes that apology. And I think if you had any empathy as a human being, you look at that guy, going ‘Wow” It’s just, still to this day, it just has not computed. “Hey Robyn” And this was a critical decision, we felt, in the editing room. We could have edited very easily before he said, “Hey Robyn, why don’t you gimme a call?” But to us, that was just such a key into his psyche. It’s just like, I couldn’t even imagine.”
During the discussion, an audience member stood up and said she too was a victim of John K. in the Nineties.
“I just wanna say, you could have ignored us survivors when the news first broke, taken your already-finished film and ran with it for some safe, comfortable nostalgia piece. But you didn’t. “This is your story too” you said to us. And you listened to us after so many years of so many adults failing us. So from the bottom of this non-binary person’s heart, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you for putting in the work to give us a voice in this story.”
The film ends with Kricfalusi’s comments, but Cicero said they followed that with a cartoon sketch—and a caption—that conveys their judgment on the animator.
Nevertheless, Vanessa Coffey, the “Ren and Stimpy” producer featured extensively in the film, stood up in the Sundance audience and scolded the film-makers for the ending.

For some reason the fifth upload had many times the number of likes as dislikes, but was a much smaller sample size than the others with only 130 views when I captured it.

i heard that the kickstarter for this 11 minute cartoon went on for 6 years. and after all that time, all those years that john k lied about the release date and had people grow impatient. This is seriously what we get
Don't get me wrong. John K is a great animator, and if it wasn't for him. The landscape of animation in the 90's would look different and we wouldn't get shows like Rocko's Modern Life, Spongebob, or any other show that look inspired by Ren and Stimpy without Ren and Stimpy
and John K even did a good job on that couch gag from The Simpsons and gave help to Ralph Bakshi and Hannah Barbara in the 80's with The Jetsons Reboot and Mighty Mouse The New Adventures
But just because John was a good animator (for the most part). That doesn't mean he was a good person: i heard that he was a nightmare to work with during the production on the ren and stimpy episodes, he would treat women creepily both inside and outside spumco, he would lie about the release date on certain things. Then they would never come, and he would treat the animators & his employees awfully
and thanks to the long delay on this short. i think i can see why John K was fired from Nickelodeon for one of the reasons which is the missed deadlines. Because of how long this short took

Don't understand why the dislike bar is so high. I thought the cartoon was alright. It's not John's masterpiece or anything and some of the camera movements are pretty awkward but it still had some decent jokes imo. That being said, even as a big fan of John's work, this is not worth 7 years of waiting and over 100,000 dollars thrown at it and it's sad this came out so late past its deadline. But hopefully with this finally being completed and John updating his blog more frequently now it's a sign that he's trying to better himself

I commented before watching the full thing, so I now have a different opinion. This is one of the worst animations I've ever seen. Seven years and 140k for this?! At least Family Guy knows what it's doing and gets an occasional laugh. There's just nothing redeeming about this. They don't even have the animation chops to show the face. I'm sure it looks bad, but don't just tell me it does, fucking animate it. I want my money back and I didn't even pay for this.

It's my opinion that John Kricfalusi is a disgusting excuse of a human being who deserves to be locked up for life and that The Oblongs is a cartoon of average quality, plus I outright despise Family Guy and hope that Disney cancels the show once the currently ordered seasons have finished airing all their episodes.
I can understand why The Oblongs has detractors, but it still had its moments as far as I'm concerned and while the Hill people didn't face complete repercussions for their nasty ways, they didn't exactly go through unscathed. They actually got humiliated a few times!
I'd much rather see a revival of The Oblongs than another episode of Family Guy or John "I'm a pedo" Kricfalusi making another cartoon hoping that the piece of shit he makes will make us forget that he sexually abused an asston of underage girls. Don't understand why the dislike bar is so high. I thought the cartoon was alright. It's not John's masterpiece or anything and some of the camera movements are pretty awkward but it still had some decent jokes imo. That being said, even as a big fan of John's work, this is not worth 7 years of waiting and over 100,000 dollars thrown at it and it's sad this came out so late past its deadline. But hopefully with this finally being completed and John updating his blog more frequently now it's a sign that he's trying to better himself

I commented before watching the full thing, so I now have a different opinion. This is one of the worst animations I've ever seen. Seven years and 140k for this?! At least Family Guy knows what it's doing and gets an occasional laugh. There's just nothing redeeming about this. They don't even have the animation chops to show the face. I'm sure it looks bad, but don't just tell me it does, fucking animate it. I want my money back and I didn't even pay for this.

It's my opinion that John Kricfalusi is a disgusting excuse of a human being who deserves to be locked up for life and that The Oblongs is a cartoon of average quality, plus I outright despise Family Guy and hope that Disney cancels the show once the currently ordered seasons have finished airing all their episodes.
I can understand why The Oblongs has detractors, but it still had its moments as far as I'm concerned and while the Hill people didn't face complete repercussions for their nasty ways, they didn't exactly go through unscathed. They actually got humiliated a few times!
I'd much rather see a revival of The Oblongs than another episode of Family Guy or John "I'm a pedo" Kricfalusi making another cartoon hoping that the piece of shit he makes will make us forget that he sexually abused an asston of underage girls. So what if this makes me a negative nancy? By calling your opposition names, you're making it impossible for sane people to take you seriously and removing whatever doubt there was of you being as much of an asshole as John K, you fucking apologist!

God the animation is so bad, the timing is all off and poses don't flow naturally into each other. Nothing feels quick and snappy as you'd expect from a cartoon like this not to mention the digital tween and zooms are too floaty. Also its extremely easy to integrate 3D into a 2D animation and the 3D in here feels so out of place and cheap. I'm curious is the last animation made by another animator? Cause it sure feels like it.

Yet again, this is not how to do an animated short!
Where to start? The animation may be good, but at the same time, it flows like ass. Also, the CGI doesn't mesh well with the 2D animation! There are also perspective errors, a brief animation note at one frame and even brief flashes (including a frame of an altarnate scene were Cigarettes looks at the can.). The music is always shifting, there are too much sound effects (hell, my cartoons uses little sound effects!), there are too much audio quality shifting, the backgrounds are an eyesore to look at and to add insult to injury, it has talent behind it! That is really sad!
Fuck John K., fuck his style of humor, fuck his animations, fuck his career and fuck his life. Except his characters (including Ren Hoek and Stimpson J. Cat.). He is a child predator, and a sexual harasser that needs to be in jail. And you know what's bad, that working with John Kricfalusi himself is a total nightmare.

I consider this the best cartoon John has written since 1993, in my opinion. Feel free to disagree. I like the storyline and actually laughed several times.
Not that the criticism is uncalled for. I understand if you're disappointed by the wonky animation, but is anyone surprised that John isn't as good as he was 25 years ago? The editing isn't really that great either. This is still 1000 times better than Adult Party Cartoon.

God the animation is so bad, the timing is all off and poses don't flow naturally into each other. Nothing feels quick and snappy as you'd expect from a cartoon like this not to mention the digital tween and zooms are too floaty. Also its extremely easy to integrate 3D into a 2D animation and the 3D in here feels so out of place and cheap. I'm curious is the last animation made by another animator? Cause it sure feels like it.

Yet again, this is not how to do an animated short!
Where to start? The animation may be good, but at the same time, it flows like ass. Also, the CGI doesn't mesh well with the 2D animation! There are also perspective errors, a brief animation note at one frame and even brief flashes (including a frame of an altarnate scene were Cigarettes looks at the can.). The music is always shifting, there are too much sound effects (hell, my cartoons uses little sound effects!), there are too much audio quality shifting, the backgrounds are an eyesore to look at and to add insult to injury, it has talent behind it! That is really sad!
Fuck John K., fuck his style of humor, fuck his animations, fuck his career and fuck his life. Except his characters (including Ren Hoek and Stimpson J. Cat.). He is a child predator, and a sexual harasser that needs to be in jail. And you know what's bad, that working with John Kricfalusi himself is a total nightmare.

I consider this the best cartoon John has written since 1993, in my opinion. Feel free to disagree. I like the storyline and actually laughed several times.
Not that the criticism is uncalled for. I understand if you're disappointed by the wonky animation, but is anyone surprised that John isn't as good as he was 25 years ago? The editing isn't really that great either. This is still 1000 times better than Adult Party Cartoon.

Dude, it's a 10 minute cartoon. That should NOT take a team of 10 animators 7 years to produce unless they're drawing every single frame by hand at 60fps and actually hand painting them.

The problem is not really the animation, it's really everything else.
There is no structure.
There are no true jokes.
The pace is so slow it kills the entire short.
The concept itself could have benn done way better in like 4 minutes.

My honest, unbiased opinion:
This is a descent cartoon. Even though I never paid money for this. I think this can be better. The visuals get a little trippy by moving by itself at times. But everything else is just fine. I think it's a good thing to watch from one of my favorite animators that hasn't gotten any recognition in a long time.

@Yelloweyeball yeah true. But unlike anyone else I think it's still fairly good compared to the other shit I've seen. It's kinda a bad move to mix cg with 2d animation. And the fact that the story actually happened in johns childhood. Expect Donald bastard never came in and ate the face, or there was ever a face in a can to begin with. But other things that was wrong with this cartoon is what everyone points out. I still can't wait to see him return for something bigger than an 11 minute short.
